Alexander Sadlo

Alexander was a self-taught pioneer in vitreous enamelling in Australia from 1956. He lived and worked in Australia before settling in England in 1972. His enamel work has been exhibited at the Limoges Biennials, the Japanese museum shows, and numerous shows in England including the Royal Society of Miniature Painters. His enamels are pictorial and encompass large plaques, ‘paintings to wear’, jewellery, realistic miniature portraits and landscapes. For about 12 years he undertook miniature portrait commissions from Halcyon Days, for their enamel boxes. He has developed and sometimes used idiosyncratic techniques such as transparent-only enamel on oxidised and reduced copper, where he manipulated and controlled the various colour potentials of red copper. He has however not made any enamels for several years due to his health and age (92), so has taken the liberty of showing here some enamels created in earlier years…
