the sea Vitreous enamel on copper, fine silver foil I was privileged to be part of a group visiting the Balinglen Arts Foundation in the village of Ballycastle. I sketched the view towards the ocean many times while there. The color of sky and sea where constantly changing with the weather and time of day. As has often been said about this part of the world, one can have three seasons in one day. I thought of the seaside and the colourful world that exists under the surface. I remembered a picture by J. R. R. Tolkein - ‘The Gardens of the Merking’s Palace’ which he drew as part of a story depicting the adventures under the sea of a lost toy. I gained a new appreciation for the landscape, particularly around the Inner Harbour with its wide variety of modern buildings. These structures inspired much of my work during that time, and I decided to pay homage to Baltimore with this literal portrait of my four favourites, in copper, silver, and enamel, using a variety of techniques and mounted on fabric reminiscent of the harbour waters. This enamel work is a self-portrait of me musing on life during the time of seclusion and isolation. I am in a state of dreaming in nature and trying to imagine color in a what felt, at times, like another-worldly universe. I was drawn to the seaweed and its gentle movement in the intertidal wash and this led me to research the evolution of seaweed. There are over 9000 species in the UK alone and they are a window into the past. He pursued his military career in India but preferred to paint, spending his frequent leave periods in Cornwall and Denmark. His achievements in military administration were suddenly curtailed, he resigned his commission. I have been impressed not only with its regular natural cycles and seasonal changes, but also with the development and growth it has undergone during the time I have known it. It has evolved from a small and struggling place to a larger and quite successful farm that has learned how to cope in an era of encroaching urbanization and economic challenge. Trying to capture the spirit of the land and the feel of the vibrant nature within its boundaries challenged me in my approach and visualization of the project. My initial sketches became increasingly abstract as I prepared to create the champleve enamel panel.
