My work is concerned with the distribution of subtle contrasts: darkness/light and matte/reflective. The contrasts are controlled to ensure that a subdued sensation is experienced by the viewer. The metal work is rigidly confined, but the enamel, as far as possible, is free in its application. The visual quality of the three dimensional surfaces is intended to be deep, weighty, and penetrative. The glare of the reflective surfaces is kept to a minimum but adequately pronounced so as to stimulate visual arousal.

I use opaque enamel, optically mixed with silica. The fired pieces are subjected to matting, which produces a mottled, textured effect reminiscent of matte glazed earthenware pottery. Transfers of gold, silver and copper leaf are also often applied to the enamel surfaces.
