Deirdre trained at Belfast College of Art where she obtained an NDD in Printed Textiles and Jewellery. She then completed a three year Postgraduate course at the Royal College of Art leading to MDes (RCA) in Jewellery. Membership of the British Society of Enamellers gave her the impetus for experimentation and exhibiting nationally and internationally. Since then Deirdre has worked as an applied artist specialising in enamelling and latterly printmaking. She also taught part-time Jewellery and Enamelling in the Ulster Polytechnic - University of Ulster and Enamelling on the Crafts Council of Ireland Jewellery Skills Course. Since she started printmaking she has enjoyed exploring and experimenting with various techniques. Some of these she was familiar with because of her work as an enameller. The acquisition of a larger kiln and recent concentration on photo intaglio and etching has furthered the interaction between her prints and enamels. Her imagery comes from the environment at home or abroad and the plants and animal life that encroach on it. She continues to exhibit nationally and internationally both as an individual artist and as a member of the British Society of Enamellers and Seacourt Print Workshop. Deirdre’s work is also in numerous public and private collections. In 2006 “Silver Connections”, a Crafts Council of Ireland touring exhibition featured the work of Deirdre, her husband Michael and their daughter Cara Murphy, both silversmiths. Many of Deirdre’s images from this exhibition are on this web site.
