My panels are mainly executed on copper sheet. They
can be single panels or linked in arrangements which are at times
free standing and otherwise intended for wall display.
A particular theme recently has been the interplay
of man and nature and the visible effects of one upon the other
mans mark left upon the earth and the eroding over
time of the built environment. Sources for the images derive from
landscape, architecture, and natural form.
Specific inspiration has been drawn from distressed
or weathered architectural fabric such as old stone and rendered
or
corrugated sheet buildings. The textured surfaces of these buildings
have encouraged a wide-spread exploitation of the ways in which
enamel can be applied expressively and further developed by over-firing
in order to extend the effects. Working with powdered jewellery
enamels I manipulate them in such as way that the outcome can best
be described as painterly. Trained as a sculptor, I also explore
the way in which copper sheet can be cut and formed three-dimensionally
and then enamelled.
Commissions have taken the form of sets of enamelled
panels sometimes copper, sometimes steel used as
embellishment for church tabernacles and for large scale murals
on cruise liners, or for domestic interiors.
My work is in public and private collections: I exhibit
regularly nationally and internationally and I work to commission
and for gallery shows.
