My passion for enamelling is the result of a journey
of exploration with various media. The materials and processes involved
in this magical art allow me to express and reflect my personal
experience and concerns with growth, balance and cohesion.
This I aim to achieve by blending seemingly conflicting
ideas or contrasting materials and techniques. Trying to marry the
industrial with the precious, the mechanical with the natural, the
spiritual with the physical.
It is important that a piece of work is allowed to
evolve, that the materials have a voice, that I work intuitively
as well as with structure. I like to respond to the materials, letting
them suggest the next stage for an item of jewellery, a vessel or
wall panel. Each part of the processes involved is of equal importance
and should combine to form a unified piece.
I produce small collections of contemporary wearable
silver jewellery in simple designs. Gemstones are often incorporated
into the pieces in order that their properties, together with the
therapeutic effects of the enamel colours, both enhance and uplift
the owner.
Making individual, more complex, pieces, sometimes
with a combined function or some element that can be exchanged,
allow me to fully explore the medium and combine different techniques
and materials. I show my work at galleries & exhibitions. Visits
to my purpose built studio in Buckinghamshire are by appointment.
Annie graduated from Ravensbourne College of
Art & Design in 1981 with a 1st class honours degree in Fine
Art. More recently she has studied precious metal jewellery making
and enamelling at Sir John Cass Art School.
